Considering Sustainable Tourism Development in the Algerian Landscape
Algeria shares a similar history and environment with its neighboring tourism-dependent countries Morocco and Tunisia, boasting excellent tourism potential with its Mediterranean climate, sea, mountains, and desert. However, its tourism development has been somewhat limited due to its tendency toward international political isolation and its abundant oil resources. While the University of Tsukuba, home to the North Africa Center, has maintained active exchanges with Morocco and Tunisia, its engagement with Algeria has lagged somewhat. Centered on our partner institutions—the École d’Architecture de Paris and the University of Annaba in Algeria—we will conduct a residential field study targeting tourism facilities in the cities of Annaba, Ghardaïa, and Algiers. This research aims to explore approaches to sustainable tourism development in developing countries.
